Choosing Your Toothpaste
Are all toothpastes really the same? Do you know how to find the best toothpaste for your teeth? Toothpaste is used along with a toothbrush to help clean plaque and bacterial buildup from your teeth. The ingredients can vary somewhat, however, and some toothpastes may be more effective than others. We can help you get a toothpaste that helps you get the most out of your daily brushing routine.
1. Does it have a gentle abrasive?
Harsh abrasives can damage the enamel on your teeth, but gentle abrasives lightly scrub and polish your teeth for more effective plaque removal. These can include silica gels, aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or phosphate salts.
2. Does it have fluoride?
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps remineralize the enamel on your teeth after bacterial byproducts have leached minerals out of them. Fluoride also helps combat oral bacteria. It is an essential ingredient in any toothpaste you choose.
3. Does it have a flavor and texture you like?
Toothpastes can come in paste form, but they can also come in gels, powders and liquid-gels. They come in mint, bubble gum, fruit, cinnamon, vanilla and other flavors. Find a toothpaste you enjoy so that you are more likely to spend the recommended two minutes at a time brushing your teeth.
4. Does it address specific needs?
If you have sensitive teeth, choose a desensitizing toothpaste. If you are prone to tartar buildup, look for a paste that combats tartar. Many types of toothpaste are available and can meet many different needs.
5. Does it have the ADA Seal of Approval?
This seal indicates that the paste has gone through extensive testing and has been found to be both safe and effective.
