Food for Whiter Teeth
We all know there are a handful of foods and drinks to avoid if you want to keep your teeth bright and white. But did you know that there are also some things you can eat and drink that will help your teeth stay white, too? The following are some that you can incorporate into your diet to keep your smile looking impressive.
• Dark chocolate contains theobromine. This is a bitter powder that helps harden the protective enamel layer of the teeth. A weak enamel layer allows for discoloration, so eating dark chocolate helps the teeth keep their whiteness.
• Green tea contains tannins, and polyphenols, which prevent bacteria from sticking to the teeth and fight oral acids. Not only does this keep stains from settling, but also stops deep decay, cavities, bad breath, and enamel erosion.
• Strawberries are not only delicious, but also contain malic acid, which are good for naturally cleaning stains off the teeth. In fact, did you know that mashed strawberries can be mixed with baking soda to create a home-made whitening material? Perfect for when you know you can’t get to our cosmetic dentist for a professional treatment anytime soon. But be careful, other types of berries do not have the same effect, but will actually further stain the teeth.
• Cheese works to increase the pH levels in the mouth, making it less acidic. This creates a healthy environment that will ensure the teeth are less susceptible to staining and erosion. The calcium that cheese provides also makes the teeth stronger.
